In 2015/2016 JLR started using a new engine branded as Ingenium. These were mainly 2lts diesel, changing to 3lts later in production. Many people have enjoyed trouble-free miles with these engines, but many customers are having major issues.
The Ingenium engine suffers badly with oil problems, whether its starvation or dilution.
Extended service intervals are proving an issue for these engines.
With repeated regeneration of the DPF, dilution of the engine oil by diesel causes thinning of the oil leading to poor lubrication and greater wear to internal components.
JLR's current service interval for most of these vehicles is 2 Years or 21000 miles.
The advice from most in our industry now is to carry out an oil change every year between full servicing regardless of milage, to combat premature failures.
Oil starvation from carbon deposits blocking the oil filter and oil galleries causes engine failure and carries a high risk of turbo damage.
Have you noticed any unusual rattles, especially when cold with your Ingenium engine?
It could be a stretched timing chain. This is another issue accelerated by poor oil quality. If your timing chain has stretched you may also have an engine warning light illuminated. We have changed many sets of prematurely stretched and at low milage just this year alone.
Below are some videos and pictures of wear and damage from these issues.
Here is an example from one of the stretched chains we have seen against a new one. The new one is on the right, old one is at low mileage on the left.
